Title: Help me name my critter.
Post by: East_TX_Spa on August 31, 2006, 01:17:14 pm
I am running out of time.  As some of you know, Ol' Meanness is with child, a masculine child according to the sonogram.  She wants to name him "Jesse". :P

When I think of that name, I think of:  Jesse Jackson, Jesse James, or Uncle Jesse from Dukes of Hazzard.  Uncle Jesse is the only one I have some fondness towards.

I have tried to come up with a name.  I like "Gunner" but she says no.  I like "Nocona" but she says no.  I'm just about ready to name the varmint "Shitbird Jones" and be done with it.

Anybody have any good names ya'll can suggest?  Our last name is Ogden if that helps.

Thank you.

Hmmm . . . would Jesse Owens be more your speed?  ;) He certainly put a stick in Hitler's eye . . .

How about family names - got any good ones there?

I've always liked Jan (J sounds like a Y) or Johann . . .

Nash goes well with Ogden . . .  ::)

Augustine Ogden (Augy Ogden, now that has a ring)

Oliver Ogden (they can call him "double O", named after Cousin Oliver on the brady bunch obviously)

Bo Ogden (that way you can call him Boog or even Booger)

Shiner Ogden (maybe not, every time you call out to your wife for a beer your son will come running)

I'm with you, Term.  Not Jesse.  Sounds to feminine, he may end up in some spa chat forum as a piece of eye candy for the ladies.

The phrases,  "Jesse get yer gun" and "Jesse's got a gun" do have a nice ring to it.

Then agian you could go the "hollywood route"

Nicholas Cage just named his boy Kal EL (as in the kryptonite name for Superman).

Bruce Willis has named his kids  Scout.

Cooter is always good.

You could go the Regal Route, George, James, William, Phillip, nah, forget it, they all sound like wooly woofters, except George Ogden, who sounds like a Boxer, or maybe a butcher, who makes his own sausages.

Jamal, Shaquile, Obidiah...they all go well with Jones...
sometimes you may just want to honor someone...
so consider James, or Jim for short!

If you anticipate him/her causing you grief, you can start getting even ahead of time by giving him a real common name,  but spelling it differently so he can never find personalized stuff at the store.    Like naming a girl Merry, or a guy Kristopher

I've thought about calling him Utah so that when his name is listed by last name first, he'd be Ogden, Utah.  I've never been to Utah, but I've been to Oklahoma.

When I was a kid, my parents told me that my real name was Uriah Franklin Ogden and my brother's was Uno Frijole Ogden because they wanted our initials to be UFO.

My parents are kinda weird.

My initials are CEO.  Imagine that.  But I'm poor.

We won't have more kids until we can agree on names.... my boys are Cameron and Preston... future boys must end in on and be 7 letters to keep with tradition.  That narrows down the choices.  I like Jameson but Cam's middle name is James so I'm not sure about that, lol.  J's girl choice is Mary Jane and no way will I name a girl that... so for the time being we are done with 2.   :)

Here are some of the names we considered when I was prego with Preston, but they probably aren't manly enough for ya.

Aidan
Lucas
Trenton
Colby
Kaden
Colin

Names Jason has had(s) on his list (that I vetoed quickly)
Justus Jordan
Woodson
Jameson Hendrix

We were riding home frm the beach last Sunday and my husband tol me he wished we would have had one more baby!  My kids are 15, and 14 and we are both already getting upset at the thought of them leaving for college and then leaving for good. I know lots of people are glad to get those teenage years over, but I am savoring every day with them.

I remember people at work telling me to enjoy the babies because that time is so very very short... Man were they right!

I hear ya. My boys are 11,13,15 and my wife about 5 yrs ago started saying she'd wish we'd tried again for that missing girl but it was medically too late. If anyone around us ever told her there was a baby in need I know what would happen.

I like the idea of a different spelling of a common name...
like instead of Stanly... could be Standly. Or maybe "stands with a fist" like from the movie "dances with wolves". Exept "stands with a fist" is a girls name.... oh well, I tryed.
The names I was going to pick out if mine had been  boy were Micheal or Nicholas.

Perhaps Jeremy would be close enough to Jesse? Goodluck with the name choosing!

Standly Ogden... hmmm.

I thought of some indigenous Australian names last night that might be promising:

Kookaburra (call him Burr or Brer, like Brer Rabbit)
Wallaby (call him Wally)
Bandicoot (there's Cooter!)
Emu
Dinkum
Tucker (my boss's middle son is named Tucker.  His youngest is Hunter or else I might consider that one)
Boomerang (Boomer)
Kanga
Doyle (the name of the restaurant where we ate the night in question)

Crap, this is frustrating!!!! >:(

Mitchell (Mitch)
Personally I think Trevor Odgen has a nice ring.  Good luck!  :)

Let's get practical.

You want a name that ends with a vowel sound, so you can really sing it out. You know, for when you catch him tying his sister's hair to the dog's tail or whatever, and you need to get his attention.

I named both of my kids with names that end in 'n,' and you just really can't build up any steam when you holler a name like that.

Also, you must plan on all possible nicknames, which most folks who have offered names here have mentioned. And you must think about words that the name rhymes with. That sadly leaves out Rick, Hutt, Frass, Ferd, Jed, Rawls, Bitts, Jainus and of course for the ladies, Delores. There could be thousands of possibilities, and new slang terms do appear, so you may not want to worry too much about this one. In ten years there could be a totally offensive name for some body part that rhymes with Chris, for all we know.

Also, you should not be afraid to include common or trendy names. Looking for the uncommon can really end up in a stinko name. In fact, I have some relatives who gave their kids really stupid names because they wanted ‘unique’ names. And using numbers instead of letters is really tough on spellcheckers. “J3SS3” is also tough on the eyes. In fact, any unique spelling of a common name should be very carefully thought through.

You probably know folks who gave the offspring strange names, then blamed it on the family, “it was my father’s name.”

Of course, Dad hated it, never forgave his folks, and everyone called him something else all his life, but nobody seems to make fun of a person’s name if it belonged to grandpa.

In reality, I suppose you could use any strange name you want and just say, “it was my mother’s first-cousin’s uncle’s half-brother’s pet name for the little sister who later died” or whatever.

If the spousal unit comes up with a real loser – and there are worse names than Jesse – you can always appease her by making it the kid’s middle name. In fact, why use just one middle name? We didn’t. Our son has two middle names. He’s big enough for three, but we settled. One was the above-mentioned father’s name Peyton – (my wife’s dad)  and the other was my father’s name, which also happens to be my middle name, so it is getting much easier for him to steal from our bank accounts as he gets older.

I hope this gives you some ideas.

Or you could just call him Chas – which is short for Charles, of course. Most people with that name are actually very cool.

 8-)

chas, that was funny! ;D You know Chris, he's got  good point.
My middle name is Lynn (pretty common) but when put with my first.. I become a guitar (mandolin). That was actually cool though because most little kids would have never put that together and it's a "secret" nick-name (well, not anymore).  A couple of things rhyme like Panda (a little cutsie-wootsie for me) but it really didn't hurt my feelings like having a name that would rhyme with a cussword or bodily function. LOL!

Have you heard of the self proclaimed "best salesman in he world" who has helped build the confidence and even better the "honesty" in the sales industry? Og Mandino?
Well, how about Mandino Ogden? Plus, Mandino would be tough to rhyme with. He could be "MO" (initials) for short if he chose later on. Mo sounds pretty tough and kids wouldn't mess with him. "Stands with two fists" still has a nice ring.
An Aussie name huh? Cool! Koalakangajackalope, yeah... nice huh? You KNOW you like THAT one!

Corny old joke about baby names.....still it cracks me up (not that its hard to do).

A woman is rushed into hospital in labour with twins, sadly it turns out that due to compications she slips into a coma.

Six months later the woman wakes up in her hospital bed.

"Doctor!" She asks "What happened to the children?"

"Don't worry madam." He replied, "The children are fine, you have a strong young  lad and a beatiful baby girl. Your brother collected them, named them and is now looking after them."

"Oh no! My brother is an idiot" She cried. "What did he name them?"

"Well your daughter's name is Denise" The doctor informed her.

The woman breathed a sigh of relief before asking "What about my son?"

"Denephew" The doctor replied.

She's not real fond of it, but since she's naming the poor child Jesse, then I'm going to name him Gunner (not Gunther or Gunnar or any of that silliness).  She absolutely would not let me name him Remus, and I guess I can sort of understand why as he is a Caucasian child as far as we know and the only Remus I've ever heard tell of was a fine Negro character in my favorite childhood book and movie.
