Title: Hobbies
Post by: East_TX_Spa on November 01, 2005, 06:32:11 pm
So, besides hot tubbing, what does everybody like to do in their spare time?

I enjoy:

Guns- Shooting, cleaning, fondling them

Softball- Our church team is undefeated and we have won our last 3 games by a combined score of 71-14.  I play left field and bat 5th

Fighting- My brother teaches hand-to-hand combat at a private school.  A group of us meet Mondays and Thursdays and beat the tar out of each other

Cigars- Love em

Whiskey- I'm a Maker's Mark ambassador

Beer- Love that Shiner Bock and Guiness

I guess the last 3 aren't really hobbies, more like vices! ;D

How about the rest of ya'll?

I would like to learn to play poker, but, and I'm embarassed to say this, I can't shuffle a deck of cards.  I can barely shuffle dominos.  Pitiful, huh.... :(

You don't need to shuffle to play. You only need a few things; an ability to think on your feet, an ability to study your surroundings, some intestinal fortitude, some decent math skills and an understanding of how to use them in the game, a good poker face (I can tell from your posts that you're sometimes full of crap so you pass here) and most importantly, to get good you have to play to win as opposed to playing not to lose like many do. Grab your wallet and stop on over and I can get you up to speed. BTW, beer and cigars are popular with a lot of players so you can combine hobbies.

It does sound like my cup of tea!  If I don't shuffle, who will?  I'm a manly man kind of guy who doesn't want to have someone shuffle my cards for me.  It would seem downright inhospitable if I asked someone to do it for me.

Have you been in games where someone had my particular, um, inability to perform?

Assuming you're still talking about poker, yes. They do a simple hand to hand card shuffle. It works fine. Besides, 20 minutes and a couple beers is all it takes to learn to shuffle assuming you have most of your fingers left (I know you like guns and knives and if you think you can't shuffle I'd worry about your ability to hold things in general).

Still got all 12 fingers and toes I was born with.

I have tried and tried since I was 7 years old to do it.  I guess I have a mental block.

Don't forget the other semifinal matches are on tonight and the final is on Saturday.  Good thing Gilmore Girls is a repeat tonight... see I'm a girl, LMAO  :D

I grew up as a tom boy... but I am also very feminine... you saw my wedding pic.  I've always gotten along with guys better than girls.  Girls are too foo fooy and get too competetive.  I don't do my hair and have no fashion sense, but I can tell you the score of the game last night or who my favorite poker players are from the WSOP (speaking of which has Nagraneu made it to a final table at all this year?  I'm DVRing, so I could be a bit behind).  My favorite classes in high school were drafting and metal shop.  I was an engineering major in college, but I sucked at it and got a degree in business, cause well anybody can.   :)  Oh I suck at sports and I can't dance, but I have fun making a fool of myself and embarrassing those around me by trying.

Oh and I would like basketball but I grew up in Portland with the Trail Gangsters.  Yeah, uh that pretty much sums it up.

Oooh, fantasy football is good too.  I'm 7-0-1.  This week was tough with 5 guys on bye, 2 outs, and 3 probables... thanks goodness for Troy Polamalu and those 8 points last night to tie it up for me.  I'm still the only one who hasn't lost.   :)

Well for me, would have to be motorcycle riding.  The faster the better.  I've topped out at 135mph.  Living in Europe was great, especially Germany with no speed limits.

My current hobby for the next 5 1/2 years, is getting my kids all the way through high school. My oldest received a full ride at college, and now that I know how to play the game and what is expected, I am pretty sure my middle child will be able to get a full ride.  My youngest will be a struggle. There is alway one.  LOL

One school that give away a ton of money (even to out of state students) is URI. University of Rhode Island.  FYI - It is out in the middle of nowhere.

So by the end of May 2011, we (my wife and I) will be free!!!!!!!!!

My hobbies:

Well, there is homebrewing beer, which shouldn't suprise anyone.  In addition to making beer, I also built a 4 keg draft dispensing system so I don't have to bottle the stuff anymore.

Then there is my guns.  I shoot pistol, and also reload my own ammunition, including melting old tire balancing weights to make my own bullets.  Save a ton of money in ammo costs!

I just got into scootering this spring- I recently purchased a 650 cc twin cylinder fuel injected scooter- kind of a scooter on sterioids.

Then there's the home theater, pool table, golf.

And like Terminator, I also enjoy fine cigars.
And a good whisky.

You know, my biggest concern is that my beliefs go so far to the right that I might accidentally circle around and be on the left. ;D

BTW, we won last night 19-14 to stay undefeated with 1 game left.  I went 3 for 3 with a 3 run homer and a sac fly.  I haven't been on an undefeated team since little league and I'm kind of fired up!

Wow, we could have one hell of a party.

I thought I was alone on this forum, never been to the general part till yesterday!

Guns, lots of guns (most work related, some for fun)
working out,
marathons (cause the doctor said I couldn't)
beer, kegorator in the kitchen
camping, in a travel trailer. Not really roughing it.
work, get paid to drive fast, play with guns, get into physical confrontations, it's like getting paid to be in high school again except you get to drive the police car!

Wow, I love all those (UFC on Spike, gotta love it)

At my brother's dojo, he has a couple of guys training to fight UFC.  One guy made his pro debut at a UFC match in Dallas back during the summer.  He choked the guy out with a Guillotine Choke with 2 seconds left in the first round.  Got a huge trophy and a bunch of free gear.

While training for his next fight, he tore some ligaments in his knee and decided to retire undefeated.

The other guy my brother is training will be awesome.  He is 170 lbs, bench presses over 400, can run on his hands, and is built like van Damme used to be, solid ripped muscle.  He'll make his pro debut within the next 2 months and I'll keep ya'll updated.

The rest of us in the class are too over the hill or just not interested in fighting professionally.  We work more on street tactics as opposed to the limitations of sports fighting.  It is extremely brutal and not for everybody.

My little brother has travelled the country training with the best people in Muy Thai, Jiu Jitsu, Silat, Sambo, JKD, Shootwrestling, Kali, and Arnis.  He's thrown out all of the ritual crap and honed it down to what works.  He is one tough SOB and I don't pick on him like I used to, he'd wipe the floor with me! ;D

I love UFC... we've been watching it since the Gracie days.  We've been Netflixing all the old battles and its so fun to watch how the rules and styles have changed.  I remember when they didn't have wait classes and I think it was Gracie fighting some big sumu wrestler.

Do you watch The Office?  There was a funny episode last night at the dojo.

The one I remember was Keith Hackney fighting a huge black Sumo wrestler.  The guy was 6'8" and weighed over 400 lbs.  Hackney was throwing these stupid knife-hand strikes on top of the guy's noggin and he broke his hand.  He did win the fight as the guy was too tired to pick himself back up.

Before class, we do a "Fit to Fight" training for strength and conditioning.  You realize just how out of shape you are when you put the gear on and start sparring.  It takes a tremendous toll on your body going for any length of time in the ring.

My brother and Troy (the retired UFC guy) are trying to get me to fight professionally.  I kick and hit like a mule, but don't have the conditioning yet.  They told me that if I didn't knock the guy out in the first 20 seconds, they would throw the towel in so I don't have a heart attack! ;D

If you were asking me if I watched the Office, no, I don't watch anything but Fox News, History Channel, King of the Hill, and Food Network.  Nothing else is worth watching.

Brewman, do you ever brew any dark beer?

I love my Shiner Bock and Guiness, but the most unique beer I ever had was called Kriek.  It was a black cherry flavored beer and cost $6 a bottle.  It was like drinking black cherry soda and was delicious.  I just couldn't swing a $36 six pack at the time.

I have a book somewhere that tells how to make it.  I used to have a homebrew kit, but the crap I made tasted like a goat's butt.

Goats Butt Ale, that would make a good micro brew name.  I've seen worse- look at the goofy lables on some of the micro brew sold in your area if you dont' beleive me!

I haven't gotten into making Kriek style or lambics.  The style originated in Belgium monastaries- the yeasts were in the air in those places and drops into their open fermentation tanks, souring the beer.  One of the more facinating styles of beer, in my book.  As you've found out, the stuff isn't cheap.

I make a lot of dark beer.  It's actually the easiest style to homebrew- the lighter colored and bodied beers are way more difficult to make at home, believe it or not.
I have made several batches of stout that are pretty close to Guiness.

My most interesting beer is Russian Imperial Stout, which I made in the fall of 1999.  The alcohol contetnt on this stuff is over 10%- which means that it has to age years to reach it's peak, and it also means that it keeps for a really long time if stored properly.
I still have a half dozen bottles left- I usually pop one open every few months to enjoy with an Arturo Fuentes Royal Salute cigar- when I can get my hands on a supply.

Really, it's pretty easy to make really good beer at home, but it's also easy to make crap, if you don't start out the right way.

If you're interested, I could talk homebrewing anytime.
Just shout if you have any q's.

Alright Brewman, you got me ready to start a new hobby!

I got rid of my old homebrew kit when I got married 13 years ago, so I need new equipment.

If you would, give me a list of what I need to get started.  Dallas is probably the closest place that has the proper supplies or I can order on line.  Any help or suggestions on your part, I am all ears.  Thanks! :)

Dad gum!  Do you know how far it is to the other side of Texas?  I believe if you start in Texarkana, TX, you could drive to Chicago quicker than you could drive to El Paso.  It is a huge state top to bottom and side to side.  I've lived here most of my life and never been to West or South Texas.

I'd be proud if you did!  There are two things that I find really sexy when women do them (well, a lot more than two, but these really stand out):

1. A woman who will take responsibility for her own protection by owning a gun and getting the proper training on how to use it.

2. A woman who will enjoy a fine cigar in public. (Very sexy!)

PS And no, not like Monica Lewinsky!

Do you have to inhale when you smoke cigars?  I know silly question, but I am a bit naiive and sheltered.  As stupid as it sounds, I can't inhale.  I've tried and tried and I can't do it (okay once at 12 and once at 19).  Its kind of like walking, talking, and chewing gum... yeah, not possible.  And no I'm not blonde.

I wouldn't mind shooting.  I've thought about joining a gun club and learning how to shoot, but I won't have them in the house.  Like I said my husband, love him dearly, but he's a dumb @ss.

The 407 is a joke, nice hiway but expensive.  If you have Ontario plates and you don't pay you can't renew your license.  If you're American or even from another Province they can only send you a bill, just don't pay it the hiway is owned by some corporation in France after my tax dollars built it.

The 407 is a joke, nice hiway but expensive.  If you have Ontario plates and you don't pay you can't renew your license.  If you're American or even from another Province they can only send you a bill, just don't pay it the hiway is owned by some corporation in France after my tax dollars built it.

I was told they wouldn't even send you a bill, but they did. I think it started off at around $5, and after I ignored it for 2 years, I think it went up to $7, but I'm sure they spent more than that billing me 100 times. I finally paid it, then got a bill for that month's late fee of 27 cents.  I finally called them and got them to cancel the bill.

Typos are killing me today.

Heck no, don't inhale them.  I sure don't.  I enjoy just puffing on them and letting the aroma waft around.  You don't even have to light it if you don't want to.

Have your husband get some training.  The NRA offers handgun safety courses that both of you can attend.  Once you realize that guns are just inanimate objects (like knives, baseball bats, ropes, bricks) and can do no harm unless used improperly (like knives, baseball bats, ropes, bricks), you might actually enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing you aren't a helpless victim-in-waiting.

I was fortunate that my father took it upon himself to teach my brother and me that a gun is a tool, not to be feared, but respected.  He taught us at a young age how to properly handle a weapon and above all stressed that it was not a toy.  I grew up not being afraid of guns but I damn sure knew not to get his out from under the bed and play with it.  Most of my friends had the same upbringing.  No one's shot and killed anyone yet.

My 7-year old daughter knows where I keep my guns.  She sees her daddy put his on everyday.  She knows she is never to touch them unless I am with her.  She knows what they are capable of doing, but she understands they can't hurt her.  Only someone doing something stupid with one could cause an incident.

I guess I'm preaching and I don't mean to.

As far as old pothead George Carlin and Sigmund "Freaky" Fraud, their opinion carries about as much weight with me as hummingbird s#$t. ;D

I love bats, I find them fascinating as well.  Only one I've ever been up close and personal with was when one of my knucklehead friends threw a rock at a bat circling a streetlight.  I guess the bat swerved into it and it killed him.  I couldn't believe how tiny it was, looked just like a flying mouse.

We do have frequent reports of rabid bats in our area.  No one's been bitten to my knowledge.

Hey, I'm a Makers Mark Ambassdor too! Got my holiday cards in the mail the other day.

My hobbies include my house. If I am not working in the yard, I'm fixing something in the house. I've got a fixer upper on a couple of acres in MA and someday hope to have it complety fixed up.

My wife and dine out quite a bit, and Thursdays have become the official "Thursday Night Drinking Club" were our gang (about 6 of us)  have a standing date at a local pub.

We ski.

We try to get to a southern lattitude at LEAST once a year.

We love to entertain and throw a few big parties a year.

I a huge Bond fan,  I have all the autographs of the every actor who played bond, and just recently purchased a Bond Paschillo (Japenases slot Machine) for my home bar.

I tired the home brew thing once. My wife and I fought like kids trying to make it. We just buy our beer now.   A Mircrobrew IPA is usally my beer of choice.

I like walks on the beach and moonlight strolls... oh sorry.

drewstar, I'm beginning to think you and I were separated at birth!

Did you get your name engraved on one of the Maker's Mark barrels?  I have a birth certificate for my barrel stashed somewhere here at the office.  The DVD updates they send us are pretty cool!

Bond, James Bond...is rapidly disintegrating as a franchise.  Sean Connery was the best and I thought Timothy Dalton played the part as close to the character in the book as anyone.  Roger Moore was OK.  Pierce Brosnan SUCKS!  I couldn't even finish watching Die Another Day.  It should've been called "Halle Berry: Double Naught Spy."

I do carry one of these on occasion, just like 007....

I thought about the whole barrel thing, but couldn't justify spending my play money on it....not when there  are tools to buy, strippers to tip and islands to viist.

I enjoyed Brosnian. I agree about Dalton, but I think that was more the writing and directors than him?  Lanzeby was interesting and Moore is the least of my favs. We'll see on the new Casino Royal comming up.

I am thinkning on getting back into target shooting, I used to plink with my Rugers (a Mark II pistol and a rifle).  Don't have the free time that i  used to.

Also have a few other autographs above my home bar:

Bob Denver (gilligan)
Don Adams (Get Smart)
Adam West (need I even say?)

Hi Term,
Yeah, that's usually how it works. Lots of "reports" of rabid bats but not much substantiation. As we all know, the media does like to exagerate. On average, one person a year in the US dies of rabies contracted from a bat. So it does happen but it's still rare. People are more likely to die from dog attacks than catch rabies from bats.
Most people have no idea how important bats, like birds, fish and other insects, are to the environment in keeping down insect pests for farmers as well as those with hot tubs under the stars! ;)
The Congress Avenue Bridge in Austin, Texas has been home to about 1.5 million bats since the early 80's.. It's become a tourist attraction and there's been no incidence of rabies transmission.
Here in upstate NY, the predominant bat species is the little brown bat (that's a description and their name). Each one can eat about 1200 mosquitoes in an hour!!! What's not to like?
I've always had a soft spot for the underdog and bats really have gotten way too much bad press.

drewstar, what do you mean about paying for the barrel?  It was free.  At least for me, I was one of the very first Ambassadors.  Maybe it changed as more and more people joined the fun.

What is meant by German proof mark is that my Walther was manufactured in Germany, not by Smith & Wesson.  S&W acts as a distributor for Walther in the U.S. and assembled some of the guns here.  The quality on the S&W models weren't up to snuff.  I sure hope you didn't think it had Nazi markings or anything such as that.  It didn't even occur to me until I started typing this reply that it might have been misconstrued that way.

I hate Nazis as much as you, I imagine.  Only one good type of Nazi in my book.  Sorry for any misunderstanding, my friend. :)

Phil, you are so right about the media blowing everything out of proportion.  I believe the brown bat is the most common species in our neck of the woods.  They are some bug-eating machines.  I would love to see the ones in Austin sometime.  If I do, I'll be sure to get some pics and post them.

I wasn't offended by the germain stuff. relax. I thought German proof ment  it was made so germans couldn't use it. You know, kinda like "child proof."  How the make a gun "German Proof" is beyond me...  (I never claimed to have a superior intellect).

I thought the barrel was "named after you" and you actually bought the barrell (Compelte full of Whiskey) , and they burned your name into it.  It cost something like $2K. Wait...that was a jack danials promotion....never mind.

What's the deal with M.M barrel? I must have missed that promotion.... I wonder if I can still get in on it.

I received a "Birth Certificate" from Maker's Mark about 3 years ago stating that one of the barrels at the distillery had been engraved with my name (and about 19 others) on it.

When the whiskey reaches maturity in a few years, I will be able to buy whiskey that came from my barrel.  Sounds kinda like a big whiskey orgy now that I think about it.

Did you get the red wax coasters at Christmas last year?  Those were pretty slick.

Where'd you meet Adam West?

What would be wrong with owning a gun from Nazi Germany?  I'd think that it'd be an interesting piece of history to have, and possibly have some value to a collector.  Doesn't mean that you agree with them.
We should never forget what can happen if the wrong people get into power for whatever reasons.   I for one wouldn't care for anyone like that to ever get that kind of power again- just think of what they could have done if they'd have gotten their jet engine, rocket, or nuclear weapons programs a bit more ahead than they were.

This year I got some holiday cards, envelopes and some return address lables with the wax logo on them.  I will use the lables, but the cards? Um no. I don't need to advertise the fact that I drink too much.

Got some golf balls once...they recently sent me a cd to watch...didn't get around to that.

Oh I agree Brewman.  Since drewstar is Jewish, I just didn't want him to think I was crowing about having a German gun marked with a swastika.  Some people might get the wrong impression about me because I shave my head and I'm as right-winged as they come, just trying my best to make sure there are no misunderstandings using this impersonal media.

I think a war-trophy from a dead Nazi would be a pretty cool thing to have, all my guns are modern and for shooting.

Only have 1 autograph, Mean Joe Green.  When I was a kid growing up in Duncanville (Suburb of Dallas), Mean Joe's son played on my baseball team.  This was in 1976-78 when Mean Joe was in his prime with the Steelers and doing his Coke commercial that is so famous.  He came to our team picnic and autographed pics for everyone.

Quick story:

Mean Joe's son, Major, came and spent the night with me after a game.  He was a big pudgy kid and had a real whiny voice.  Wasn't a good athlete at the time but he was a good guy.

He slept in my room and I slept on the couch.

11:00  "Mrs. Ogden, I can't sleep.  This clock's tic tockin' too loud."

11:30  "Mrs. Ogden, I'm thirsty.  Will you get me a drink o' water?"

Midnight  "Mrs. Ogden, you got any rubbin' alcohol?  I got chiggers on my weenie!"

That was the last night he got invited over!

Being a batman fan who never grew up I am seriolsy considering buying one of the Shakespere busts that are now available.

IT's a detailed, full sized replica of the one in Bruce Wanyes study, and yes the head tilts back and there is a switch that you can use to turn off and on whatever you;d like. $300.00.

Trying to convince my wife that we MUST have this.

On the subject of guns., I always wanted a broom handled mauser, and  one of the Thompson 45's complete with round drum magazine and violen case.  Never got it.  Maybe someday?

I'm telling you drewstar, separated at birth.  I was born in 1966.  The number 1 rated TV show at the time, care to venture a guess?   In my baby book under "First Words", it says "Batman."

Now I have a batsuit!  I just need a ward and a butler, oh, and a billion dollars, and I'm all set!

If you want to buy an original Thompson, it will only set you back about $17,000 nowadays.  That's not including the 100-rd drum or the original case, which I believe is another $1500.  You can get a replica one for around $700, but it is semi-auto, is very heavy, has a gawky looking longer barrel (to be legal) and is made by Kahr Arms, owned by the Rev. Moon's son.

Personality of the year? The monkees.

If you have the money, you can buy anthing. I've seen nerds on the web that sell full reproduction utility belts, and there is even a guy that makes batmobiles. ($85,000).

Thank god my wife handles the money.  My house would be filled with booze, porn and TV memorbila.

The pole? I alway found  others have told me  that the pole is just a distraction. Too far away from the seats...

IME you can't even get a lap dance for $1, but my experience is limited.

A private in home show will cost more than one at a club.

The non-skank factor has to be worth a few $$$.

The amount a man enjoys himself regardless of the experience of the dancer should play into the tip.  Its not all about dancing, rhythm, pole or no pole, its what you do with it.  Also, poles are not the only prop that can be used.

As far as the ladies' various talents (and they are vast, I'm impressed!), the cooking is the only thing that really matters when you get right down to it.  My wife cooked for me once when we were engaged, I enjoyed it.

I bought myself an leaf blower/vacuum for Christmas last year (along with my edger and chainsaw).  Much easier than raking.  Plus that way I can just blow them over to the neighbors yard and not have to bag them.   :)  I don't use the vacuum part much cause our tree drops 'ouchies' as the 5 yr old calls them and it ruins the cutter on the mulcher if they get sucked up too.

Lori, when you enjoy the cigars, do you have a particularly favorite brand?  It seems that most of the women like the thinner styles like Macanudo (very mild) and also some of the flavored ones.

The reason I ask is that at our VIP Night we are having a cigar bar and I want to make sure and have some available for the ladies.  Any other ladies out there into cigars and, if so, do you have a preference?

Backwoods are rough little cobbs of cigars that are really enjoyable to just chew on.  I do enjoy cheroots when I'm stomping around in the woods.  Puts you in the "Man with No Name" frame of mind.

Ok see what happens when Lori and I leave this forum for a bit...ya'll go absolutely insane! I suppose I should put in my habits errrrr hobbies too:

My Computer--getting ready to install a new digital camera and eventually I'm looking to upgrade this puppy to a bigger system.

Huge Lord Of The Rings fan--I just bought a new sword off of Ebay totally cool too!! I have the extended DVD trilogy and watch it almost every single day.

My guns--I'm getting very proficent with my Henry .22 lever action rifle (hubby calls me Annie Oakley when I'm sporting it) it's got Iron Sights that I have had a few problems learning to shot. I also have a 20 gauge shotgun (just went pheasant hunting last week and got 1 stupid things were not flying at all!) and my Winchester 270 of course. Ohh and I also have a 223 for the coyotes and varmets. Hubby does all the reloading with the exception of shot gun shells and my 223.

The rest of theis list includes: my darling husband of which I've had his unconditional love for the last 9 years; my dogs three labrador retievers one of each color; my kids and for those of you who are anticipating them leaving...don't! It's lonley without them! Christmas decorating has become a hobby also..I spend half of nov and dec decorating the house!  then there is baking for the holidays...cooking...sketching and drawing...painting (I'm working on a painting of one of our famous rocks around here called Heart Mountain)....chatting with you all on this forum

I'm also learning Chinese forms of Meditation. Tai Chei; and some aroma therapy.

But...my all time fav past time is SHOPPING!!!!!!!

Hey Term,

I just go and smell a bunch of cigars, then I pick.  I usually like the sweeter smelling ones.  Thinner are good, I have small hands and a thinner cigar is easier to hold.  I'm sure the one you mentioned would be great!  I don't have that much experience, just a tried a few.
Title: Re: Hobbies
Post by: Brewman on November 13, 2005, 08:41:36 pm

Opus X's, eh?  That's one I haven't tried yet.  I'd like to though.
The cigar pickings around here are absolutely pitiful- lousy selection, and overpriced.  They just doubled the state tax on cigars and pipe tobacco this summer to help raise revenue, that isn't helping either.

I've been ordering from Thompsons in Orlando.  Compared to around here, they are cheaper, and have a good selection.  They even have a few house brands that are reasonably priced and pretty good for the money.  Some of their house brands taste like they are using rubber bands as filler, though.

You want a good aroma from a cigar, try some cedar wrapped ones if you can find them.  Arturo Fuente offers several types, as does H. Upmann, and others.
(Please remove the cedar before lighting the cigar!)

That cedar wrapping is what hooked me on Double Chateaus, and Royal Salutes.

I've been ordering from Thompsons in Orlando.  Compared to around here, they are cheaper, and have a good selection.  They even have a few house brands that are reasonably priced and pretty good for the money.  Some of their house brands taste like they are using rubber bands as filler, though.

I've ordered (Actually my wife has) from Thomspon cigar.  She usually surprises me with one of thier sampler packs that have a variety of different cigars. I've had decent luck, a few nice ones, a few ones that weren't so hot.

It all works out well, since  most of my friends (myself included) don't know too much about cigars and smoke them as a social thing.... I do keep a few of the popular Cuban's on hand for special occasions and friends who can apprecaite a fine cigar (Rome &  Julliets, Cohiba, Punch, Upman).

Nice!  I stopped trying to get cuban cigars, too much bother for me.  But I did enjoy the few I've sampled over the past few years.

The large casino hotel complex up the road a couple miles(which nicely erases our night sky with their laser light show) has a relatively good walk in humidor in their gift shop.  Once they had a box of cuban cigars, which they claimed were made pre-ban and therefore legal for sale.  If I recall, they wanted upwards of $50 each cigar.  Last time I was there, this box was gone, so someone(s) must have purchased them.  Too rich for this guy, though.

$50 each? Ouch.

My wife and I try to get away somplace tropical every year. I can usually find  Cuban cigars in the island shops at a decent price. Usually anywhere from $8-$25 each depending on the guage, leaght and brand.  I usally grab a few in the $10 -15 range.  Of course there is always canada too.

Take the cigar band off when crossing the boarder, and customs can't say anything.

I have a "Friend" who use to put them in his wife's personal hygene box.  Typically on X-rays,  if you buy the right size,  they don't look suspicious.  ::)

Of course, I have a feeling we'll be haveing open trade with Cuba in the not too distance future.  :)

I always thought that trade ban was silly, especially cigars.  Like you said, once the bands are off, you can't know where they came from.
Plenty of places will ship them that way- you get the cigars without the bands, and they send the bands to you in another envelope.
Be interesting to see what happens when/if they allow trade with Cuba.  Wonder how much allure is attributed to them  being "forbidden" vs how good the smoke is?

Way back when, Coors beer wasn't allowed to be sold in my area, and people paid a lot of money to get the stuff.  Then they started marketing it in this area- and after the initial hype died down, the stuff didn't sell any better than anything else in it's price range.
I worked in a liquor store during that time.

Another diversion:
Anyone remember (or still have any) Billy Beer?
Or JR Beer?

I agree. I think there is a lot of allure to the Cubans, because they are hard to come by and are often associtaed with being costly.  A status symbol of sorts.  That's why when I can pick some up for less than other cigars available legitmatley I do.  Are they better? You're asking the wrong guy. But I have ment some "elite" smokers who claim so.  Meh.

Yup. I remeber the "coors" fanfare (mostly due to Smokey and the Bandit).  I can also remember some excitment when "Strohs" became available in N.E. yuck.

My dad had a can of Billy Beer.    A quick look at ebay shows you can still find a few cans of it around for under $20. Huh. I always thought A full can of Billy Beer would net you millions. :)

the most unique beer I ever had was called Kriek.  It was a black cherry flavored beer and cost $6 a bottle.  It was like drinking black cherry soda and was delicious.  I just couldn't swing a $36 six pack at the time.

There's a bunch of brands of Kriek. (BellVue and Mort Subite are the two that immediately come to mind)
Kriek is a Cherry flavoured Lambic...there are also framboise, (raspberry) peche (peach), and several others.....Lambic is a Belgian beer style, where the beer is innoculated with bacteria to allow it to go sour....think of beer equivalent of sourdough.....once the beer is "finished", it is sold in various forms...geuze (plain) or the fruit flavoured ones mentioned above.

Most of the Belgian breweries making lambics have been doing it for hundreds of years and have huge vats that are constantly being added to with fresh beer to get the beer innoculated with the old bacteria......
It's not something you can buy in a package and whip up.....takes years to make good lambic, if you have the proper bacteria cultures to begin with. So it's not surprising your homebrew kit tasted like goat arse.

the last couple brews I made were a porter (chocolate brown) and a BIG India Pale Ale (dark copper colour)
Not much for the light lagers myself.

At a charity event last spring I had the pleasure of tasting Sam Adams Utopias beer.

This is a specail edition, Extreme beer.  It is 50 proof, (25%) and cost over $100 a bottle.

It tasted like  a  s  s.

Still, glad I tried it.  ;D

After all, it was a "free sip"

and what's better than beer? That's right bucko, FREE Beer.

Last night on the History chanel there was a Modern Marvels episode on Brewing, and Jim Koch was interviewed.  He mentioned that Utopias beer, and I was wondering how much it was.
I'd like to try some, but not at that price.

I have sampled Sam Adams Tripple Bock, it was interesting, but I wouldn't want more than a little at a time.

Is this Utopias similar, anyone know?

Here's a summary:

http://www.audioholics.com/news/industry/SamAdamsUtopias.htm

I agree with the article,  if I remeber correctly (I sampled quite a few beers that night :) ) It did not taste at all like traditional beer.  More like a sherry or even cognac. I remeber grimacing after tasting it, as i was expecting an ale taste, after all, it was Sam adams.  STill interesting and had I had the foresight, should have bought a bottle and stored it away. Apparently there are folks who would pay big money for such a find.

They use several types of yeast, including champagne yeast to boost the alchohol and it is aged in several differernt barrels that originally were used for ports and the like.

The tripple bock was similar in that regard- not carbonated, more like an liqueur than beer- very sherry like.
In the inverview last night, Jim Koch said they had to develop a strain of yeast that was alcohol tolerant using some iterative process.  Most brewers yeast poops out at about 12% abv, and they needed something to get that 25% level.  Koch said the Utopias beer was the strongest brewed beverage in history.
Maybe someday I'll get a shot at tasting this.

Thanks for the arcticle link.

I was lucky enough to find the free sip at "The Taste of Nations". This is a charity event held by many many cities across the US and feature food, beer and wine from local resturants. A nice time.  Sam adams brewery  was there, (I'm in MA)  and I was able to taste the beer when I stumbled into one of the silent auction rooms.

Maybe keep your eyes oipen for The Taste of Nations, Sam admas may not be there, but you might stumble across something just as interesting. :)

Ever get any of Stone Brewings Arrogant Bastard? 7.2% so a little strong but really an excellent ale.  A disclaimer on the back of the bottle:

Arrogant Bastard Ale: This is an aggressive beer. You probably won't like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth. We would suggest that you stick to safer and more familiar territory---maybe something with a multi-million dollar ad campaign aimed at convincing you it's made in a little brewery, or one that implies that thier tastless fizzy yellow beer will give you more sex appeal. Perhaps you think multi-million dollar ad campaigns make a beer taste better. Perhaps you're mouthing these words as you read this.

The only difference is Arrogant Bastard Ale is probably pretty good stuff, which in the case of H##ven spas, isn't quite so true.

On a side note I just read a news blurb that the distillery in Scottland that produces Johnny Walker Scotch has put out a special run to commemerate the 200th birthday of their creator.
Stuff is selling in the UK for about $24,000 USD.
Yes, that's twenty four thousand bucks a bottle!

Don't mean to jump Brewman but I'm killing my last few minutes at work. The long answer is:

Before refrigeration, it was nearly impossible to brew beer in the summer due to the hot weather and bacterial infections. Brewing ended with the coming of spring, and began again in the fall. Most were brewed in March (Märzen). These brews were kept in cold storage over the spring and summer months, or brewed at a higher gravity, so they’d keep. Märzenbier is full-bodied, rich, toasty, typically dark copper in colour with a medium to high alcohol content.

The beer advocate web site is a must visit for beer lovers.

Good answer, and I don't mind a bit that you jumped in.
Nice to know there are a few other beer people on the board.

I need to fire up a couple new batches pretty soon, and it's a good time to start on something like a marzen- I can easily get the correct fermemtation temperatures now for lager yeast.  They'd be nice and ready for early spring.

Lt. Dan and Brewman, thank ya'll!  I did find a tag down in the bottom of the 6-pack that says the following:

This is a true Marzen-style ale.  Traditionally, Marzen was brewed in March (Marz) and enjoyed in autumn.  Shiner 96 marks the first in a series of annual commemerative brews that will count down to our Centennial in 2009.  Cheers!  Or as they say in Bavaria, "Prosit!"

Quite a joke, considering that they don't even make their own whisky. JW is blended whisky....I can't remember for sure, but I believe the greatest percentage of their whisky Cardhu.....JW situated right next to their distillery, for convenience....they buy whisky from many distillers and mix em all up according to a recipe to make their blend taste exactly the same, time after time.......  ::) ::)

Word is they have (or are coming out with) a single malt.....Green label possibly? since they don't distill for themselves, I'm wondering if it's just gonna be rebranded Cardhu??   ???

That's interesting indeed.  I knew JW was a blend, but I figured they distilled at least something.
So they are just a blender/bottler?

My tastes for scotch run to the single malts, anyway, but I won't turn down JW, Chivas, J&B, etc..if they are offered.  Just like I won't turn down a Coors Lite if that's what the host is serving.  Make no mistake, I'll try turning them when I'm providing the beer, but some of them are just fine with the light beers.

Hey Brewman. Yes I have a full can of Billy Beer and a can of JR. They are among the approximately 850 full bottles and cans that I have collected over the years. I actually stopped actively collecting about 10 years ago. The family and I lived in Asia for a couple years in the early 80s and I had/have some interesting ones. But no place to store them now. My wife's at the point that she wants me to get rid of them, well except for a few that came from my Dad's place and my uncles.

And the Billy Beer is the only beer I didn't have two of so it's the only one I haven't sampled. I'm guessing I didn't miss much. Course I could open it... how bad could it have turned after only 15 or 20 years....  paul

Okay here's a synopsis of my miserable life.

Spending way too much time on the computer either playing Call of Duty or converting home videos to DVD.

Home improvement projects.

Spring and Summer play soccer with my wife on a coed over 35 league. I know you're asking what's a 47 yo native californian doing playing soccer. My wife is from Italy and has played in women's leagues for quite some time. So about 12 years ago I started. It's actually been a blast and is a good cardio workout.

Working. Gotta pay for a daughter in college and a son who's a senior at a private high school. Just keeping the kids in cars that work is equivalent to the GDP of a small carribean country. For all of you who aren't there yet just remember kick them out before they turn 16, you'll thank me later.

Oh and of course, tubbin.

One of the salespeople I attended Top Gun with at Watkins just had his first book published.  It's a fantasy book called The Demon King by Michael Salazar, I believe.  He sent me an e-mail about it but I can't find it.

I guess if it's a success, he probably won't be selling spas much longer.  Heck, you ought to write a book about the adventures of spa selling!

Well, of course it does.  What'd you think it meant?  Peace, love, cigars, and Shiner Bock, that's the ticket.

Missed this one earlier. To throw my two cents in...

Hobbies; Snowboarding, singles and doubles squash, tennis, windsurfing, scuba diving, collecting wine, hiking, travel, woodworking, sailing, navigating new blogs, Goslings Rum, Basil Haden bourbon, Highland Park single malt scotch, flyfishing in warm climates (or anywhere for that matter!). Are chocolate chip cookies a hobby?

After all that fun... the spa is nice to just do nothing but soak in.

"... collecting wine..."

I tried collecting wine. It ended up being an empty bottle collection.  ::)
