Title: Newbie
Post by: thatbpguy on January 03, 2008, 10:25:49 pm
Got a surprise $3,000 bonus at work and the wife & I felt we would buy a small 4-person hot tub. The one and only thing I know about hot tubs is that I like sitting in them. We can probably add about $400 and that really isn't a lot of money for a spa. We also determined not to buy one off the internet for a host of reasons. We don't need a lot of fancy jets as we just like to sit & soak, so 8+ jets will be fine. What we do want is a reliable hot tub. This weekend we're going on our initial fact finding mission.

A couple of ones we found in our price range is the Softub (large one), DreamMaker (Eclipse, X-100...) and Hot Springs Solana.

Any thoughts on these or other brands? General advice?

I would look at a Nordic for the money you can get what your after also Free flow would fit that budget. I would stay away from the Soft tub and the dream maker, neither spa actually has a heater and only runs a single speed pump that recaptures the heat from the motor to heat your spa.

The Solana RX would be the best investment for you're $3400 providing one could be had at that price.  Anything else in that price range will be taking up space ina landfill within 5 years.

I would also consider looking used.  You can sometimes find a great deal with someone who is moving or adding a pool and trying to sell a barely used (premium) tub for pretty cheap.  Back in 05 I was looking to spend about the same amount as you and spent about 6 months until the right tub fell in my lap.  If you've got cash on hand its amazing some of the deals you can find (once you know what you are looking for).  I think my brother paid $2500 for a year or so old Jacuzzi 345 about a year ago.  His local dealer still had that model year on sale for I wanna say 6ish... so he made out great.

In addition to the Solana RX, I'd look at the SX.  It is a much more comfortable spa than the RX.

One thing you will need to keep in mind is you will probably need to up your budget a bit.  Even though you are looking for a small spa without a lot of features, you're quality brands are going to run in the $4-$5K range.

Solana spas are an exceptional value and are made by Hot Spring.

You might also look at some of the small Marquis spas.  Again, good quality and some can be had for a reasonable price.

Wot she said.

A quick look on Craig's List found several quality tubs in your price range.  Keep in mind you'll need to reserve some cash to hook up the electric and prepare the site where you will be putting the tub.

Not exactly true!!   We have a ton of Freeflows out there going on 6 years, that are running strong.

This post has more in common with manure than it does credible advice. The Solana is a fine choice but not the only. Nordics are very well built and Free Flow are also a good functioning spa that is what this person seems to be looking for, simplicity. Todays Nordics use gecko controls, aqua flow pumps, are all pressure treated frames they are solid for the money.

Funny you say this. I started calling dealers and asking for a price range and there were no spas under $4,500. Then I started calling and asked if anything could be done at $3,500 and they all say yes. Hmmmmmmmmmmm....

Garage??? Say it ain't so. I can't imagine anything more depressing than being in my garage surrounded by mowers, tools, etc and trying to relax under the flourescent lights.

Put the tub outside or at least in a screened in porch.

Why the garage?  My parents live in the area and they just wear hats 90% of the time and don't have a problem with the rain.  :)

Also, I don't know if they still do it, but my parents got their tub I wanna say 3 or 4 years ago from George Morlan (The Water Heater King).  The got one of the lower end Sundance tubs (it was called Sweetwater back then) for less than $4k.  It was probably in Feb and it was an advertised one weekend only sale to get rid of the last years models.

HOTSPRINGS HOT TUB WORKS PERFECT - $695

We have a very nice hot tub we are selling. It is deep, and hot, and it works beautifully! This is a 110v tub that has a newer pump in it, it is very quiet and heats really good. Just take her home, plug her in the wall, you'll be in hot water before you know it!

Our tub comes with a good cover, This tub has been sanitized and you can come see it in action, right now!! In seating 6 people, this tub has been well maintained and is going to provide a lot of enjoyment for years to come.

I am so sure of this, I will guarantee you will not have any leaks or mechanical failures for 30 days, if so, I will fix it free! Also, if you buy it today, I will deliver, in the Portland/Metro area, for $50!!! The hot tub measures 86" X 76" and has a solid foam fill in it for prevention of heat loss. I unplugged this one day, went out of town for 4 days, came back to find the tub water was still very warm to the touch! In the winter! I only have 1 picture, if you need further information, please email. Cash! Thank You!

Not a bad deal there, depending.  Looks like a Diplomat.

Wouldn't say it really seats 5-6.  More like 3, very, very comfortably.  ;)

How much would this tub asking $2250 cost new?

In your price range you will be more than happy with a new Freeflow spa like a Passport or a Nordic spa. Both extremely reliable without any possible headaches.  Id say go  new if you can to make your first tub owning experience a great one.
Title: Re: Newbie

Before purchasing a used spa, don't forget to consider potential cost/hassle of equipment issues down the road.  If they'll give you even a short parts warranty, or if you don't mind doing your own work, this is probably the best way to go at your price range.  If you aren't mechanically inclined and/or don't want to worry about equipment/labor expenses, a new spa from a reputable company and dealer will likely pay off for you.

Many companies who deal in used or refurbished spas do offer a short parts & labor warranty.  This may solve both concerns.

On the other hand, both the Hot Springs Solana and the Jacuzzi would be great buys for the money.  Both are industry leaders, highly reputable companies, and use modern methods of design and production.  Dealers for both companies typically have a reputation for great customer support and service.

Also along those lines, one could consider:  Hot Springs Hot Spot or Tiger River series, Sundance 680 series, or Bullfrog Series II.  All of these have competitive features and warranties (Bullfrog Series II have same warranty a full-feature Series I spas).

You probably won't get a lot of "bling" in a high-end tub at your price range (as opposed to buying used), but the service and warranty backing may well be worth it depending upon your lifestyle.

Manure's what you make of it!  You can lead a man to water but if you teach him how to fish, he'll never get any work done.  So, are you a fisherman or a manure salesman?

All the others were in different states across the country. Maybe you've heard of him??? He's caucasian, 28, and his last name is Montgomery.

I'm trying to hook him up with my Jacuzzi dealer. He told me that you've never experienced soreness until you train for and compete in a fight. I'm sure it's nothing a premium spa couldn't handle in 30 minutes. ;D

Maybe, his name might not be Zeke Montgomery might it?  Big Zeke is one of the best muy thai fighters in those parts.  A real beast with both hand and foot.   Ground game needs work.  I seen him use a illegal finger jab into Adood Zanus during their fight, then he knocked out Adood with ar roundhouse kick from his blind side.

MMA is becoming so mainstream these days and there are so many different venues, I just don't buy the line of needing to fight under an alias.  Or if people do use an alias, that alias should be searchable and verifiable (i.e. Kimbo).  If its not, it seems like the only benefit to the alias to hide losing fights...

I sat next to guy on a plane that said that he and his brother were into this big time.  One many have been world ranked.  Is there a well known brother team in the UFC?  I'm pretty certain he was using his real name.  I'm not really into it (never watched any of it) so the conversation about fighting was about 2 minutes of him telling me some stuff to which I replied.. Uh, OK.  Sounds great good luck and I hope to see you on TV sometime.  For all I know he coulda been the reigning champ.

So far, I've knocked out Bill Barty, Warwick Davvis, Ed Gaedel, and Kenny Baker allin the first round.

I whipped Mordecai Lago (choked the little bastard with a half soldier Tuco move)

I pounded Adood Zanus after submitting him witha rear mounted choke, but who hasn't.

...but I doubt you could ever step up in class and take on Miguelito Lovelace!

Nick and Nate Diaz (both UFC now)
Nogaro brothers (Big Nog is UFC, can't remember where little nog is)
Shogun and Ninja Hua (UFC and Elite XC)

Were an of those at one time (or currently) one of the top ranked fighters?  Ken and Frank sounds the most familiar.  I do recall the one I sat next to was the younger of the two and his brother was the one that EVERYBODY who ever heard of UFC would know.  It could also have been the Diaz boys.

Why is it I can only find one of those fighters (Kenny Baker, 1-1 (lost by kimura)) on Sherdog? Can't find them by googling either.

Brooke, I imagine you will get alot of hits if you google Adood Zanus, but spell it phonetically.... ::)

Ken and Frank Shamrock were yesteryear's big guns.

Pioneers in the mixing of the arts.

"Thats funny spatech, most the other names were actors as well.[/quote]

In order to remainn under the radar we use aliases of famous dwarf actors when we fight outside of sanctioned chanells.  I fight under the name of Scaramanga from The Man with the Golden Gun in ohnor of my brother Herve Villaichaize who played Nic Nac in the movie.

Herve was very famous for his roll of Tatoo on Fatnasty Island tv show.  "De plain! De plaine!"  I always admired my brother for overcoming his shortness but it would have been to obvious if I fought under his name so I took the name of the character played by his good freind Christopher Lee.

Herve would have been a great fighter, but he drank too much and loved long legged women to hard.

I really don't know why I continue to post because you are so obviously full of it... but I guess its the creativity in your responses that amuse me.

You must be fighting underground because there is not a senior division in the UFC... I mean Scaramanga (aka Phillipe, the youngest brother) you were born in 1954.

Redefining the phrase "absolutely ridiculous".  ;D ::)

On a factual note: Shamrock trains fighters out of the "Lions Den", while not competing - still very active in the sport.

K. Shamrock and me were going to figth a match billed as 'The Irishman vs. the Lepercaun' but it never came off because he felt it would tarnish him image, moreso if I kicked his arse.  this was back in the early 90's when I was stil younger and he was just becoming famos.
