Title: Hot Tubs, Tiki Torches and the Big 50.
Post by: Richs100 on May 11, 2007, 01:35:48 pm
I had some friends over last week for my big 50.  I had the lid off the tub, water feature going and all the tiki torches lit.  Looked real nice and I got a lot of compliments on the new layout.

But next morning, I went out for a soak and noticed that there was oily, black junk all along the waterline.  At first I couldn't figure it out since no one had been in the tub the night before.  Then I realized that this was from the smoke put off by the tiki torches.  I had to use baking soda to get it all off.  And my torches are not that close to the tub!

Just thought I would mention it.  Those torches will dirty up a tub real fast!

Citronella oil, to keep away the bugs.

I have two tourches that I have by the tub and never had a problem.

They are copper bowls with cotten wicks that I fill with "tiki tourch Fuel" (yea, that's what they call it). They are about 5.5" tall.  NEVER had a problem.

I call it Citronella oil, but it is what you mentioned....tiki torch fuel.  Bought it at Home Depot.

Maybe I need to trim my wicks, but I thought the idea was to have a little smoke to annoy the critters.

Also, my tub is Sterling Marble, so its pretty light in color.  And the black marks were also on the upper parts of the tub too, so Im pretty sure it was from the torches

Rich, Trim your wicks...that will help. That dark smoke occurs when the wick is way too long, I think the oil doesn't burn completely.
Happy 50!!!  ;)
