Hot Tub Bird!
(1/1)
Bonibelle:
Hey Galen,
Here is whyI know a little about exotic birds...
This is my Tango...fresh out of the "tub"...She is a 5 year old Yellow Nape. My husband came home from a meeting one night and told me if his friend's parrot eggs hatched, I would have a baby Amazon! Sure enough, I started getting email pictures of eggs and then two babies.
I got Tango when she was 3 months old. I had her DNA tested for the very reason you stated, they do tend to get nasty when they mature...
especially the males.
Tango is also an excellent talker, but what is really amazing about these birds is their exceptional intellegence. She has a great vocabulary but she also knows when to say things...it's more than just repeating! Among many things that she says, She sings the Eagles Fight song, complete with spelling E A G L E S...and she usually dances and ends the song with a loud Arrrrriba.
Galen, is the sound that your bird making like a clucking sound? Does she kind of nod up and down when she makes that sound?
galen:
Yes, and Kona only does this when I'm around. What does it mean? I was thinking its the chick saying I'm hungry. But I not sure.
Bonibelle:
she is telling you she loves you...I think it is a bonding thing..like the baby bonds to the mother that feeds it. Maybe Anne can tell us exactly what it means, but I think it is a kind of attachment thing..Tango did that as a baby and sometimes she will still do it.
I am amazed at how much I love her...she is really a part of our family. So many of my friends think I am nuts for putting up with the mess and the noise, but I couldn't imagine being without her!
galen:
My whole family thinks she is cool. My older brother took right to her. Kona will not bite. But some people still are intimidated by her beak. The worse thing they can do is jerk back. That sends them a signal that "hey he's scared of me. So you think she's telling me she love me or wants me to hold her? Kona is going through her first molt. I scratched her head for the first time last night and I thought she was going to fall off my arm. LOL. She closed her eyes, you could tell she really liked it. i took her into the living room tonight and her her on her stand. That lasted about two minutes and here she come. I like everyone that I can get to hold her to hold her. She will be more rounded. Does Anne have a bird?

I replied on the other thread about my parents' amazon, Merlin. He lived with me for a few years when i was in college, but then my dad missed him......I dont have the lifestyle for a bird right now, and I'd hate to not be able to give one all the attention that he/she needed.
The clucking thing I'm not positive about (can we do audio clips here as well as photos? that would be hilarious) but one thing that psittacines will do to show affection is that head bob. They will sometimes actually regurgitate. I have never seen a baby do it, but adults do, and it is a maternal thing, as if they want to feed you. I used to put up with a lot of slimey regurgitated bird-food on my fingers in the name of letting Merlin say "I love you." Perhaps that same head bob from a baby is begging mom for food.
Love the bird pics!!!!!!
