Our lock up is underground.  We get no radio reception.  When we bring in an accused, we go underground and pull into a sally port.  The doors shut and we are locked in a room.  At this point we lock our firearms in a box and transport the accused into custody.  

As for custody officers, they are not allowed guns, or weapons.  We have foam pepper spray for custody to prevent contamination.  Foam spray hits and sticks while mist or spray goes into the air and effects everyone in doors.  Tasers are now available with custody sergeants.  And hell, they are being used more and more.  

Brewman:
Foam pepper?  Didn't know about that product.  Sounds like a good idea, though.  Regular pepper indoors can get nasty, that's for sure.

 I think the Taser is a great tool.  Most all the local PD are now carrying them, with one exception- that cities chief won't authorize for some reason.  So those officers  often have to call the county deputies for Taser backup.
