I think PEX tubing and plumbing also had problems at one time or another- not sure if that's what you're thinking of.  Seems there was even a class action lawsuit filed against that companies that made the stuff.
However, it's still being sold at local Big Boxes- not sure if any contractors in the area are installing it in the new homes being constructed in this area, though.

I've owned 2 homes now (and rented one other) that were plumbed in copper- never had any pinhole leaks.
I'm not aware of any problems around here with the water we have attacking copper.  Maybe it's the water itself that's the factor.
