Running Hot tub off House boiler
« on: April 29, 2021, 12:35:05 pm »
Good day gents

We bought our house off the inlaws and he was attempting to convert their hot tub to be powered by the boiler system that runs in the house. His first system was very crude and consisted of just throwing a bunch of pipe in the tub and pulling it out once it went to temperature. The next step he moved to was a heat exchanger, but couldn't find a good way to attach the metal exchanger to the plastic pipes. He had just used a fernco coupler, which would blow apart once you turned the pump on.

Now that we own the place id like to get the tub up and running properly on the boiler system. Any input on what kind of exchanger or better way to get the tub tied into my boiler lines so we can ditch the factory heater?

You have to circulate water FROM the tub to the boiler to be heated and then back.

I'm assuming copper pipe to the boiler. What size pipe from the hot tub and to the boiler?

What you are probably going to have to do is cut the PVC and glue in a threaded fitting, then you can install the copper adapters to get to size and then install a copper union which then can be sweated to the copper pipe. The union makes it easy to attach and remove the pipe.

Fernco couplings are for non pressure drain lines. Downhill plumbing, not uphill plumbing. Any body know why downhill plumbing is more expensive than uphill plumbing?

I'm still trying to sort out how you are going to get the heat into the tub--a big heat exchanger or something? Pipe to serve as an underwater radiator?

Doesn't your boiler have 2 sides, one that heats and one that circulates? Do you use your boiler to feed hot water radiators in your house?
