Aluminum Covers?

I've searched the forums here and I've seen people say they've seen some last 15 years.  For those in the know, what are the limiting factors that keep it from being a "lifetime" cover?  Is the foam between the sheets of aluminum the weak point in aluminum covers?   Do they retain their R-value throughout its life for does go down?
