The starvation thing is true- even with all that hunting the deer population keeps on growing. They've relaxed a lot of the old deer hunting regulations in MN, and possibly other places.
One of our local park reserve systems keeps track of their deer population, and once there are too many deer for the park area to support, bow hunters are invited in to thin the heard in a closed, controlled hunt.
Otherwise the heard grows too large, and the animals suffer due to not enough food, which forces them to wander looking for more, taking them onto the local highways where they often get hit by motorists.
It upsets the small handful of PETA who exist in the area, but nobody pays them any attention.
JcDenton:
In our area, deer are becoming a major problem. They are on the highways, the residential streets, and in our backyards. Unfortunately, they cause numerous traffic accidents and injury to both man an animal.
We actually just had a film crew (CBC) in our neighbourhood looking for horror stories on the escalating deer population in our area. Having been there (or here) for only a couple years, we don't have any. We do leave bags of apples out in the fall for them to eat though.
My wife thinks they're pretty to watch.

Vinny:
As you can tell, I don't hunt either. Actually as long as a hunter, ANY HUNTER, is responsible, eats the meat they get or is providing a "service" to a communitee by thinning a herd - I really don't have a problem with them.
I do have a problem with a bunch of people who call themselves hunters and don't act responsibly. Not being a hunter, I've heard too many stories of irresponsible people posing as hunters shooting up things because they can - that's where the sniper deer come in!
Of course the good stories - I don't know!! :)
stuart:
I got a cow license for Estes Park, Colorado where a third of the Elk in the state winter.
Couldn't decide whether to actually bring a gun or just a lead rope and a baseball bat....(those of you from CO will understand)
