Hot Tub Buying Guide

Jets

Jets are the primary reason you go with a hot tub, rather than a long soak in your more traditional bathtub. There are a number of options to provide you with the massaging effect you are looking for. First jet quantity is not the final arbiter of a good hot tub as the therapeutic value is not entirely dependent on number. Look for 12 to 16 jets (some offer up to over 150 jets), but consider more importantly the ability to adjust the pressure of the jets. You can get a customized massage by regulating the air/water ratio on some of the jets. But don't overlook the kind of jet offered.

There are mini jets (as the name suggests these are smaller than the normal jets) that come in groups to give you an effective massage. These are found in more therapeutic massage spas.

Then consider the jets that move the water up, down and sideways, for targeted massage. If you have an aching back, this type of jet can ease the pain. You often find these jets in pairs or even trios and they are also found in more therapeutic applications.

For neck massage, the pillow jets relieve your neck strain without having to submerge your head...hence the name "pillow". For your shoulders, look for shoulder jets higher than the water line that move in a number of directions so you can focus the pressure on the exact location you desire.

Rather than its pretty straightforward brother, swirl jets move the water in a circle, not for focused massage but for overall comfort. And for the really big brother of jets, look for volcano jets at the bottom of the spa that are there more for effect.

Whirlpool jets do just that...create a whirlpool effect around the edge of the whole tub. They provide tremendous pressure in a very small area to accomplish this and produce a beneficial hydrotherapy. An athletic training room is going to have this type of jet in its spas.

Whatever jet combination you choose, make sure it will meet your particular needs. Their placement in the spa should also accommodate the therapy your desire, hitting your major muscles at just the right place when you are seated in the spa.
