Hot Tub Buying Guide

Hot Tub Covers

Hot tub covers are designed to keep pollutants out of your water. Falling leaves, dust, dirt, twigs can easily foul your hot water and make it unsafe to use. Hot tub covers keep these pollutants out of your water while holding the heat in. You should always keep a cover on your hot tub when it is not in use. This will help prevent debris from getting in and the heat from escaping.

Why is Having a Hot Tub Cover Important

Having a hot tub cover will keep your hot tub cleaner. Without a cover, your water will be constantly subjected to dirt and debris making it necessary to empty your hot tub, clean it and fill it much more frequently than necessary. This will be time consuming and give you less enjoyment of your hot tub than you may have using a cover to prevent these frequent cleanings.

Hot tub covers also hold the heat of your water in, saving you money on heating costs. Imagine how much energy it would take to keep the temperature of the water hot on a near freezing day. If you live in a climate that gets heavy snowfall in the winter you will get snow falling into your hot tub. Your heating element will have to work overtime to try to keep your hot tub reasonably warm. The harder your heating element works, the more energy it needs and the quicker it will wear out. This can all add up to huge unnecessary costs.

Safety is another major reason to have a cover on your hot tub when not in use. Uncovered hot tubs are a serious danger to small children and animals, especially if the tub is at deck level. It is far too easy for a child or a pet to slip and fall into exposed water. Having a strong cover prevents accidents from happening that could have serious, even deadly results.

What do I Look for in a Hot Tub Cover?

There are several things you are going to want to consider before purchasing a hot tub cover. First, you need to take a look at your climate. If you live in a cold climate with a lot of snowfall you are going to want a sturdy cover that can withstand snow loads and has excellent insulation. If you live in a warmer climate, you don't need as much insulation and you can probably get by with a less sturdy cover.  Consider your average temperature lows and annual snowfall when selecting your cover.

If you have children or live in an area where there are children, you will want a hot tub cover with locks. Locking hot tub covers come with two or four locks. It is better to get a cover with four locks for the added peace of mind those extra locks will give you. You are also going to want a cover that is strong enough to bear the weight of a child. While hot tub covers are not made to be walked or sat upon, kids will be kids and you are going to want something strong enough to bear the weight of a child who decides to take a stroll across the top of your hot tub.

How Long Will My Hot Tub Cover Last?

There are many factors which affect the life of a hot tub cover. There really is no way of predicting how long an individual hot tub cover will last since there are so many things to factor. The amount of sun in your area, the climate, whether or not you exercise proper care in taking the cover off and putting it back on, and whether or not it receives regular cleaning all contribute to the wear and tear of your cover. Most spa covers last three to eight years with proper care.

When looking for a replacement hot tub cover check the warranties. the longer the warranty the better chance you have of getting a spa cover that will last closer to eight years than three.

Don't forget to check out custom-made hot tub covers as well as ready-made. Some manufacturers of custom-made covers provide longer warranties than those companies that sell ready-made. Just keep in mind that no hot tub cover is going to last as long as your hot tub does, so you are going to have to buy a replacement cover at some future date.

You can purchase covers online or from a local dealer. Take your time, and consider your location, climate and needs. Look at all your options and you can find the right hot tub cover for you.
